AOR Omega 3, 60 Softgels
On a cellular level, omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for maintaining cell structure, fluidity, cellular health, and balancing a diet high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. One of the most important properties of omega-3 fats is that they are a source of the essential long chain fatty acids EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA have different, but very equally important, roles in heart, brain, eye and cognitive health. EPA is the antiinflammatory omega-3 fatty acid associated with downregulating the cytokines which contribute to chronic inflammation, heart disease, neurological diseases and joint pain. In studies, supplementing with EPA was also associated with optimal mental health. DHA’s role in the body is especially critical during the fetal stage and early infancy. It is involved in the development and healthy functioning of the brain and retina. DHA also has an important role in preventing LDL oxidation in the arteries, a key step in the progression of heart disease. The omega-3 index (the amount of EPA + DHA in red blood cells) is considered to be a biomarker for cardiovascular disease, with risk decreasing as the omega-3 index increases. To maximize EPA and DHA in the body, both fats should be consumed in their “converted” forms, such as in fish or microalgae oil, as the body is inefficient at converting other plant based omega-3 fats into the longer chain EPA and DHA.
