The amla fruit is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, and also contains a gamut of bioflavonoids. Interestingly, although amla extract actually contains very little vitamin C, it is a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin C itself. It is thought that the flavonoids enhance the antioxidant activity of vitamin C by keeping it active longer. Bioflavonoids, or simply flavonoids, are pigments found in most plants. They are renowned for containing polyphenols (or phytochemicals) that are themselves abundant sources of antioxidant activity. Bioflavonoids include anthocyanins from bilberries, ellagic acids from strawberries, curcumin from turmeric, catechins from green tea, proanthocyanidins from grapes, and quercetin from onions, to name a few. Vitamin C is also included in this formula.
